On the potential of language, and hobbies that can help us fulfill it.
Can we think without language?
Some great thinkers thought we can’t think without language:
The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.
But science has proved that we actually can think without language:
[…] vast portions of our everyday cognitive experiences appear to be unrelated to language per se.
Moreover, even inner speech does not appear to be necessary for thought.
Some think in landscapes, and some in music:
I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.
As opposed to Wittgenstein’s statement, the limit of our language isn’t the limit of our world. There might be more to us than what we can currently express with our words.
Linguistic relativity
[…] the linguistic relativity hypothesis, refers to the proposal that the particular language one speaks influences the way one thinks about reality.
The linguistic relativity hypothesis means language isn’t just an expression of our inner world, but can also transform it.
The potential of language and communication hobbies
Combining these two ideas – us not being defined by language and language’s ability to transform us – we discover language’s potential: through rich language, we can enrich our inner world – and communicate more about it.
